Innocence Claims: Representing the Wrongly Convicted
Imagine serving years — even decades — in prison for a crime you did not commit. Recent scientific advances, particularly in the area of DNA evidence, have exposed the fact that hundreds and probably thousands of persons are in prison for crimes they did not commit. Hundreds of persons have been exonerated based on DNA evidence. The State of Texas, and in particular, Dallas County have had more exonerations than any other state or county in the country.
Udashen Anton has been on the cutting edge of DNA exonerations since the beginning. Our firm has represented several falsely convicted persons who were cleared based on DNA evidence. We regularly work with Barry Scheck and the Innocence Project of New York, as well as the Innocence Project of Texas, on innocence cases.
More Than Just DNA
While the vast majority of exonerations around the country have involved DNA, our attorneys have also successfully exonerated and achieved the release of persons based on other methods of proving their innocence. These exonerations include recantation of false testimony, particularly in child sexual abuse cases, and locating new evidence that proves actual innocence.
Causes of Wrongful Convictions
The causes of wrongful convictions are well documented. They include erroneous eyewitness identification, false confessions, prosecutorial misconduct, faulty and false scientific testimony and ineffective representation by defense counsel. Our firm has handled cases in each of these areas, and we are uniquely equipped to pursue justice for the wrongly convicted.
